A land rush occurred before the Cherokees could defend themselves in the Federal legal system.  Almost every mound in the ceded lands was taken within a reserve except the sacred Nikwasi Mound.  Whites identified this area as a future county seat and immediately surveyed off and prevented Cherokees from living in their 400 acre tract which was subdivided into lots and sold.
